NOTES.

One of around thirty variants on the horse and lion theme, the present canvas could be said to exemplify Stubbs's move away from the confines of a sporting painter through a romantic pursuance of the Burkean Sublime, and, consequently, a move away from mere horse portraiture towards the more elevated and favoured genre of history painting.
